Mavericks Men's Basketball Soars to 19-6 Record

La Costa Canyon continues their strong season with a decisive 71-56 victory over Carlsbad, holding first place in their league at 4-1.

CARLSBAD — La Costa Canyon's boys basketball team improved to 19-6 on the season with a commanding 71-56 victory over crosstown rival Carlsbad on Monday night, extending their hold on first place in the league standings with a 4-1 conference record.

The Mavericks controlled the pace from the opening tip, building a double-digit lead in the second quarter that they never relinquished. The 15-point margin of victory was particularly impressive given that LCC had edged Carlsbad just weeks earlier in a much tighter 52-50 contest on January 16.

A Season of Consistency

The 2025-26 campaign has been defined by the Mavericks' ability to win games in a variety of ways. In late January, they survived a back-and-forth battle with Rancho Buena Vista, pulling out a 73-69 win. They followed that with a dominant 61-42 dismantling of Sage Creek on January 30, showcasing their defensive versatility.

The lone blemish in league play came on January 23, when Torrey Pines handed LCC a 61-51 loss — a result that served as a reminder that the path to a league title won't be easy. The Mavericks responded to that setback with back-to-back victories, a testament to the team's resilience and competitive character.

Looking Ahead

With the regular season winding down and CIF San Diego Section playoffs on the horizon, the Mavericks are positioning themselves as a serious contender in Division I. Their 19-6 overall record and first-place league standing give them strong seeding position heading into the postseason bracket.

LCC competes in the North County Conference Coastal League alongside Carlsbad, Sage Creek, Torrey Pines, El Camino, and San Dieguito Academy. The Mavericks' remaining league games will determine whether they can capture the outright league championship.
