ENCINITAS — San Dieguito Academy's boys soccer team dropped a 1-3 decision at Torrey Pines on Tuesday in a league matchup that highlighted the challenges facing the Mustangs as they get through a competitive conference schedule.
The loss to the Falcons continued a difficult stretch for SDA, which entered league play looking to build on a mixed early season that included a 3-0 victory over La Quinta in the SoCal High School Classic but also a 1-3 loss to San Marcos in December and a narrow 0-1 defeat to Torrey Pines in a non-league meeting on New Year's Eve.
A Tough Conference
The North County Conference Coastal League is one of the most competitive soccer leagues in the San Diego Section, and the Mustangs' early results reflect the quality of opponents they face week in and week out. Torrey Pines, perennially one of the strongest programs in the region, has proven to be a particularly difficult matchup for SDA this season.
Against the Falcons on January 14, the Mustangs managed to find the back of the net once but couldn't contain Torrey Pines' attack, which generated three goals to put the game out of reach.
Path Forward
With league play still in its early stages, there is time for the Mustangs to regroup and string together results. The team's next test came quickly, with a home match against La Costa Canyon scheduled for January 15, followed by a trip to Oceanside on January 20.
The coaching staff has emphasized competitive effort and improvement throughout the season, and the Mustangs will look to translate that mindset into positive results as the league schedule progresses toward the CIF playoff picture.
