LA JOLLA — It was one of the most eventful weeks in UC San Diego athletics history, with standout performances across four sports and a signature upset that announced the Tritons' arrival on the national stage.
Men's Basketball: Mayes Named Big West Player of the Week
The Tritons' men's basketball team won both of its home games this week, defeating UC Davis 68-51 on Wednesday and UC Riverside 72-66 on Saturday to improve to 18-9 overall and 8-7 in the Big West Conference.
Against UC Davis, Bol Dengdit led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Hudson Mayes contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds in a dominant defensive performance. Tom Beattie added 10 points as UCSD held the Aggies to just 51 points.
Mayes followed that with a career-high 24 points against UC Riverside on Saturday, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Dengdit chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds. The Tritons controlled the paint with 40 points inside and scored 16 fast-break points while holding UCR to 37 percent shooting. Mayes was subsequently named Big West Player of the Week for his performances.
Women's Basketball: Triple-Overtime Heartbreak, Then a Bounce-Back
The Tritons' women's team experienced the full emotional range of college basketball this week. On Wednesday at UC Davis, UCSD fell 88-80 in triple overtime — only the second triple-overtime game in Big West Conference history. Erin Condron posted 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Makayla Rose added 16 points, eight rebounds, and six steals in the marathon effort.
The team bounced back emphatically on Friday at UC Riverside, winning 79-68 behind 20-point performances from both Rose (24 points, four rebounds, two steals) and Lev Feiman (20 points, four steals, a career best). Condron contributed 10 points and six rebounds. The victory kept UCSD atop the Big West standings at 18-7 overall and 13-2 in conference play.
Baseball: Four Homers Stun No. 1 UCLA in Season Finale
In perhaps the week's most dramatic result, the UCSD baseball team — opening its 2026 season at top-ranked UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium — dropped the first two games of the series (4-8 on Thursday and 2-7 on Friday) before pulling off a stunning 8-7 upset on Saturday.
The Tritons launched four home runs in the series finale, including two from Michael Crossland and a go-ahead two-run homer by Nick Costello in the ninth inning that proved to be the difference. The victory handed the Bruins their first loss of the young season and gave UCSD a 1-2 record to start the year.
Track and Field: Record-Setting Finale to Indoor Season
At the Battle Born Classic in Reno on February 14-15, the Tritons' track and field team concluded its indoor season by setting eight school records. Brycen Tablit broke the school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.62 seconds, while Brandon Orlow set a new mark in the 200 meters at 21.14 seconds. Miles Bennett won the high jump, clearing 2.05 meters on his first attempt.
On the women's side, records fell in the 60-meter hurdles (Charis Wondercheck, 8.75), 60-meter dash (Lauren McBride, 7.63), 400 meters (Jordyn Thomas, 55.27), 800 meters (Jayla Addison, 2:16.27), and weight throw (Feyi Olukanni, 15.99 meters). Kenneth Tucker also set a men's record in the long jump at 7.35 meters. The Tritons' outdoor season begins March 6.
